Shoreside electricity is vital for zero-emission docking
“Shoreside electricity is vital for zero-emission docking. The ports of Spain are proactive in overcoming technological hurdles to green their coastline and welcome cruise tourists.”
Puerto del Estado engaged with CLIA this week to discuss the technical and infrastructure needs for vessel shoreside electricity supply. The technology used for many vessels, such as Cruise Ships, Cargo Vessels, and smaller pleasure boats, helps them operate a vessel on electricity at the dock. The ship, connected via a cable to the landside electricity grid, can either entirely or partially turn off its engines. As a result, emissions are reduced, and noise is minimized, adding value to the local community.
Over 40% of today's cruise vessels can already use this technology, whilst almost all new build vessels will have this option installed.
The European Union is determined to provide zero-emission docking for the Maritime Sector on a broad scale by 2035. EMSA, the European Maritime and Safety Agency, has published a comprehensive guide on the technology and its infrastructure requirements. LINK
Thank you, Marcus Puttich, for providing deep technical insight and the team from Puerto del Estado for the collaboration and the will to support the Cruise Sector's decarbonization efforts!
